Tuesday 16th September & Wednesday 17th September - Broome

My dear mum has been in John Flynn hospital for over a week now with various complications, so we have been a little distracted, trying to stay in contact. Julian and Crystal have done an amazing job dealing with the issues and supporting mum. The medical staff have been excellent keeping us informed and seeking the best options.

Tuesday was Glen’s birthday so we headed into Broome for lunch at the Pearl Lugger Cafe which we had previously had morning tea at.  It was warm but with a breeze.  We did a bit of window shopping and decided that we needed to get the car serviced before heading south, so organized that for Wednesday and booked another night at the Broome Bird Observatory (BBO)  We headed up to the Town Beach park for afternoon tea and birthday cake.  Glen said hello to the take away van lady and as it was quiet she decided to tell us her life story and we were visited by a drunk aboriginal woman who read palms.  She was not offensive but you could see that she had spent most of the afternoon drinking.  So that’s one way to celebrate your birthday Broome style.  We went back to BBO and had a celebratory drink in peace.

It takes a few days for the wild life to re-appear after you invade.  We have always said its the 3 day thing.  If you only stay one or two nights you miss them, we have always noticed they re-appear again on the 3rd day. I missed an earlier opportunity to get a photo of the camp blue tongue, but here he is.  18 Sept 2014 003

It was also good to see that the camp wallaby was also just sitting and looking and not leaving in a panic.

Wednesday 17th September – We had an early start to get the car to the service centre and they generously offered us a loan vehicle while ours was in being serviced.  We went off to the shopping centre for the cool interior and finished getting things done that we kept forgetting.  We have replaced the plastic drum on the front of the camper as the original one which is over 7 years old and had finally split.  We can put our washing in to soak and wash to the rhythm of the road.

Dinner last night was Barra Wings.  We had seen them advertised and were curious as to what exactly they were.  They are the barra cheeks, they cut just after the eyes and at the back of the head and leave on the fins.

No, this is not my effort.  Here they are presented upside down to give the wing effect.  I steamed ours.  Glen really enjoyed them.  I thought there was too much messing about with all of the bones for the small amount of meat that you got.  It’s a novelty and great marketing to sell a what would be wastage in the processing.
