8th – 11th March 2015 – Burra SA – Fine clear sunny

Burra – what a remarkable town.  Just so much history it is unbelievable.  Burra is a sister city to Mt Morgan – and the connection is copper.  That is as far as the resemblance goes.  We have been to Mt Morgan and Burra totally out shines it.

We purchased a passport key – which gives you access to all the heritage buildings around town.  We spent two days exploring these and that was not enough time.  We also did a big day trip of 213 kms which was a large loop west, south, east and back to Red Banks.

209 k drive - monday

This was our planned trip, we missed the turn off to Clare, but went down to Martindale Mansion which advertised it was open and even had signs out at the turn off.  When we arrived at the gates, it was closed that day.  So many times we have tried to visit a heritage listed place to find it closed, I just wish that they would all get their act together and close on a set day so everyone knows what to expect.

Our camp site at Red Banks – we pretty much had the camp ground to ourselves all the time we were there.  It was quiet and peaceful.  The crows were the constant alarm clock at 6.30am each morning.

The rotunda in Burra and Ornamental Grape was growing everywhere.  It will have lovely autumn colours in a couple of weeks.  We loved the cobblestone gutters.

Nearly every house is built out of rock – there is certainly a lot of rock available.

Lot of churches, the stain glass is from another church.  I don’t think I have seen so many heritage buildings in one location before.  It was overwhelming.  We fell in love with them, but kept our heads as they present a lot of work and a lot of money to live in one.

The copper mine, the gaol, the miners dug outs – abandoned villages,  basically every sort of building in a 19th century town.

We visited a brewery which was a network of tunnels underneath it.

The country side is rolling hills and lots of great little villages.  Our drive down to Adelaide was not much over 100 kms and we stopped off at Marrabel for lunch at the hotel.  They advertised a new bakery in the hotel and we were thinking of getting a couple of bread rolls for lunch.  The bakery only had pies – but they were the best pies in Australia!.  $5 each – deep pie.  Glen had Butter Chicken with large chunks of chicken breast pieces in it and I had Steak and Mushroom with large chunks of steak and mushrooms.  The sauce was just coating the meat.  Nothing like the rubbish other pie shops sell.  We didn’t need to do dinner after that.

We managed to find a car wash on the way in and gave the car a quick wash and also the trailer.  When we arrived the guy who operated the car wash was straight over for a chat to see where we had been and where we were going.

Adelaide Caravan Park – right near the city – it’s about a 2km walk into the city.  Could not be a better position.  It is a small park, lovely and quiet and very leafy.  We are backed on to a lovely park so have a view though the chain wire fence.

Adelaide has to be the best city that we have visited in Australia.  It leaves everywhere else for dead.  It has beautiful buildings, parks and gardens and great free transport.  Very impressed – we will be coming back to this city.
