Saturday 30th August 2014 – Barnett Gorge (Gibb River Rd)Fine Sunny Warm – slight breezes 9c - 32c

We packed up camp this morning to move further along the Gibb River Road.  Just as we were leaving a woman came rushing over, their Patrol wouldn’t start.  The security system had faulted and they couldn’t over-ride it.  She was looking for someone with a SAT phone.  We said we would check if the Park Rangers were still up the road building a new rest area with amenities and ask them to assist if not, we would return and let them know.  Their best option then was to get a lift to Drysdale Station 70 km up the road and phone from there.  The rangers were there and had a SAT phone and one went back to the Gibb River to help them.  What ever is wrong is going to be very expensive as a trip on the tilt tray to Kununurra is around $3000.00.   So we headed on our way having done what we could.

They are grading and realigning the Gibb River Road, so it was a smooth journey for us.  We stopped at Hann River for morning tea and then headed up to Barnett Gorge, a tip from Mr Townsville who we met at Home Valley.  Thanks Mr Townsville.

We are in paradise, a crystal clear Pandanus lined creek with a little rock pool, which has been added and altered by each camper for a nice spot to have a dip without worry. There are plenty of fish in the creek, tiddlers to ones which are up to 15cm.  Nothing to think about catching.  Sitting in the water, they just swim around you.

We took the opportunity to hose off the camper trailer and car.  After travelling over the new red road, which was being watered for dust.  We arrived with a red car and red camper trailer.

We then set off for a swim and late lunch.  Mid afternoon a herd of young bulls with long horns have arrived to eat the Pandanus.  They just push their way through the bush.  We watched a large bull at the Gibb River take a mouthful of Hakea leaves and keep walking breaking the tree in half.  When we got up this morning, another tree had been snapped off at the base.  It is amazing at what the Kimberley cattle actually eat.  They keep their distance from the camper and just try to ignore you, as we do to them.  A couple of very large bulls (one across the creek, one our side) started a bellowing, rumbling & snorting face off we thought that they were going to have a go at each other, which would have been bit scary – in the end they backed down and moved off.
