Friday 6th February 2015 – Eyre Highway South Australia

Good bye Western Australia – Hello South Australia
We are now in South Australia !   We left camp at 9am and picked a great day to drive east.  The weather was cooler and there was some cloud, so we were not driving into the sun.  The expected forecast for the Eyre Peninsula is hot hot hot -  up to 40C – so we will be hugging the coast this coming week and if it cools down will try to get to Gawler Ranges.  There is also a high fire risk in the Eyre Peninsula as well.

This was our camp at Moonera last night.  There are tracks going everywhere basically around every patch of tree or shrub.  Lots of places to tuck away and well back from the highway.  We travelled 520 kms yesterday.

There are a couple of passes on the highway where you either drop down or climb up the scarp.  After being at Hamersley Inlet, I know exactly what this is, the lower level was the original sea bed, and the top the original shoreline -  like the photo of Mt Barren.

The scarp is above us here.

We turned off the highway to try to find Fire Stick Cave, but there were tracks going everywhere and we couldn’t pick up a definite route to it.  It was about 16 kms in, so we turned around and back to the highway rather than waste time and petrol trying to find it.

We stopped at Mundrabilla to refuel $1.56 L for diesel.  Another barren little stop on the highway.  There was a lovely bit of shade which we grabbed to sit in for our lunch.  There was a nice cool sea breeze.  The price of fuel was the same at the Eucla fuel stop.

We passed through Border Village which is on the WA – SA border.  We fully expected to stop for quarantine, but apparently it is at Ceduna.

We have been very good and had only a mandarin and half a avocado to go which we ate for lunch.  We are now not carrying any fresh fruit or vegetables – so our diet won’t be the best until we get past Ceduna.  We do have tinned fruit and vegetables on board and are eating them.

We are now quite close to the ocean along the Great Australian Bight.  There were these very large beetles in the flowers of the shrubs at this location.  They were really amazing.  They had little alien eyes and some sort of split tongue and they were cleaning the pollen off their eyes and legs, just like a cat cleaning itself.    I have never seen a beetle like this before.

That cute face does remind me of a flower wasp face though..... the rest looks beetle though.

Their bodies looked like wood grain.  Their wings are separate under the the shell layer and it looks like four wings when they fly.  They are really noisy when flying.  I will have to find out what they are.

The photos of the our camp tonight, make it look barren, but there are low line shrubs everywhere and in flowers.  Lots and lots of birds chirping in the shrubbery BUT they are fast and I can’t see them let alone get a photo.  We travelled 326.8 kms today and pulled into camp around 3.45pm (central western time)  We have come forward 45 minutes since yesterday.  We still work on camping time :)
