Wednesday 18th February 2015 – Memory Cove Camp

Today is cool, overcast and clearing this afternoon.

It has taken until after lunch to even glimpse a bit of blue sky.  There were only two other campers out of five here last night.  They have both left and we have Memory Cover to ourselves, only one day tripper and no more campers.

The bees are here by the hundreds.  We have lots of birds also around camp.  White Eyes, Scrub Wrens, Fairy Wrens, Wattle Birds.  We have not seen so many Wattle Birds grouped together before.  There must be at least 20 or more in the one group.

We left water out for the white eyes and they came had drank and bathed, it was a popular site.

This morning after breakfast, we went for a walk out to the headland and half way back made our way down to rocky shore and finished the trip to the beach that way.  Just after starting along the rocks, I startled a rabbit right down at the shore line.  I can only assume that it was there eating the seaweed.

This is the view of Memory Cove on the way back.  We went down to the rocks on the second little outcrop.

This is what the coverage is like and a view of the path.  It is so different to the National Park area on the way in.  The rest of the park having been cleared has no tree growth and is very desolate.  It was great to see the area as it would have looked when Flinders visited.  Once the trees have been cleared, it is next to impossible to get anything else to grow again.

As we were coming around the path and looked over towards the beach, we couldn’t believe that we spotted our car and camp site.  We haven’t unhooked the car from the trailer.

There are a lot of different sorts of sea weed.  I spotted some fish close to shore.  Black and White striped, quite small and a larger one that had wide black white and yellow.  Nothing that you would think about eating.  There were also quite a few large shore crabs in spectacular colours, mainly of bright red / orange and black.

We have also seen the largest Chinaman Hats shells on the southern coastline.

We came back and had a cup of tea and then walked the rocks on the other side of the cove.  This was where I photographed the Chinaman Hat shells.  The tide is coming in and it’s finally clearing.  The one thing I dislike about living in the south is that the day is half over before you find out what sort of day it’s going to be.  Every day the sun is rising later and setting earlier.  We can’t get used to how late the sun rises here in Summer.

All the parks have the same problem with the bees in summer – they are desperate for water.

Bees 001 Bees 002

These are the ones drinking, the rest are swarming around.  You walk (there is no dodging it)  amongst the swarm – and yet no stings – which is pretty amazing considering the huge number of bees.
