Leaf colour in the outback. The leaves of the plants in the gorge can be generous with their size and colour with their access to water all year round. The difference between the gorge plants and those on the top is a great contrast. It is very dry and desert like above the gorge. Surprising there are not a lot of birds. We have seen zebra finches (small group), black faced cuckoo shrikes, a couple of crows, and some honeyeaters. We have a red capped robin around camp and of course the crested dove. None of these are in large numbers.
Today, We drove to the northern part of the park – Joffre & Knox Gorges plush Hancock and Weano Gorges. We had decided that we needed to restock fuel and food at Tom Price, so would do a day drive to these gorges and take the Tom Price Railway Road north to Millstream Chichester National Park.
Still recovering from the AE (Ankle Episode) I was limited to the small walks to the gorge lookouts. I waited and Glen tackled the gorges. I was sorry that I couldn’t go as these gorges appeared to be even better than the Dales Gorge.
These gorges can be dangerous with flash flooding, there was a memorial to a rescue guy who lost his life in a flash flood trying to rescue a tourist in 2004. Glen thoroughly enjoyed the walks he did.
This sign was at Oxer look out explaining the formation of the rock layers.
