The camp spot has worked out well, we are protected from today’s wind. It seems to come and go. It is forecast to be 37C today, so the breeze is welcome. We spotted dolphins feeding in the lagoon and only surfacing very very randomly so a photo was not going to happen. The birds have also been very random this morning probably because of the wind, so we have not sighted the white winged wren today :{
The wind kept blowing all day, we had a late afternoon swim when it seemed to ease. Three days has seen us out here. Nobody was catching any fish, too windy to kayak and nothing but sandy bottom to look at if snorkelling. Definitely not as good as Cleaverville.
Thursday 9th October 2014 – 40 Mile Beach to Barradale Rest Spot on the Yanrey River.
We sailed on the SS Hopes Camper Trailer last night. With the wind and the canvas flapping and groaning, we thought we were at sea on a sailing ship :) Still had a good nights sleep though. The eclipse of the moon was disappointing because of the haze either from the gas being burnt from the Gas Plants or the bush fires. The eclipse had started before we got to see the moon. We got up early to get on the road to our next overnight camp spot. We had planned to camp on the Ashburton River and had visions of having heaps of water. There is no camping allowed there now and the river was almost empty. We settled for lunch there instead under the shade of some gum trees. We travelled another 70 kms to Barradale Rest Spot which is also on a dry river bed. Tomorrow we head to Exmouth and the reef :) can’t wait.
Rio Tinto have provided a viewing stop by the Patterson Overpass to their most easterly mine.
We got to see these large mining trucks in action at a close proximity. They wave like engine drivers :)
The clearance height of the overpass is 9.9 metres so that the trucks can fit.
As nice as the rest stop was, including tables, shade was not high on their agenda.
We encountered red sand hills again and the arid landscape was a reminder that we still in the desert.
We called into Nanutarra Road House for fuel, it has a caravan park and is right at the Ashburton River Rest Spot, so you can get my drift why the camping has been banned. We should have had lunch there, with the hot dogs a bargain and $11.50, a small bucket of chips $6.95 and a Hamburger at $21 or if you want the lot $25. Bacon, Eggs, Sausages for $27. Mind you all of this is service station food standard.
The scenery was much of a muchness until we got closer to our stop for tonight. We noticed that there were several quartz veins similar to the China Wall near Hall’s Creek. They were not as impressive but all the same, the geology was there. There were quite a few large ridges and lots more wild flowers beside the road.
It will be a early start tomorrow as we have about 200 kms to Exmouth and need to restock with water. We heading off down the western side of Cape Range National Park for a few days camping – probably out of internet/phone connection. If you want us we will be the ones out snorkelling on the coral reef. :)
