This is the camp view, late afternoon yesterday –

We packed up and headed along the cliff track a little further before turning back to the Eyre Highway.

This is the fence line to the cliff face and (right), the last post -  I think I could see another which had fallen off the top.
It would have been a little bit interesting watching them fence to here.  These posts are very old and I would say that these posts have been here for over 100 years.
We called into the Nullabor Road House for fuel, believe it or not they had just one diesel pump and the pumps not clearly identified after we went around the circuit twice, we drove off.  Then we finally got a sign saying “Nullabor Plain” .  Below is the photo.

Which is what we were expecting for the entire trip, but then it went onto heaps of trees and large sand dunes.  As before, it is nothing like we expected.

We refuelled at Nundroo and a couple of kilometres past, we stopped for lunch.   I did consider skipping making lunch and just get something from the servo, but one look told me that would not be a good idea

There were quite a few old ruins of pastoralists who tried to make a go of it and failed.
We finally got into Ceduna and went through quarantine and headed to the information centre.  We arrived with just ten minutes to spare and bought our permits to camp at Laura Bay.  We had to turn around and go back towards the way we came in to get water.

We then half half an hour to shop in the supermarket before 5pm closing.  A quick whiz around and we headed to Laura Bay.  It is very very basic but it will do for two nights and it is out of Ceduna.  We had a close call losing our water tank cap.  We left it off after refilling in Ceduna and luckily it didn’t fall on the ground, but into one of the trailer compartments.  It’s the first time after all these years of owning the trailer, that we have forgotten, I bet we don’t again after that little scare.

We drove out to Dog Point at the conservation park to see if there were any other camp sites, but no.  There are heaps of mosquitoes here, even got bitten when putting up the trailer.

Beach side – no nice sandy beaches here at Dog Point. Ceduna itself is small, some nice heritage houses.

Monday 9th February -

SO, we are camped at Laura Bay – according to the information centre “It’s lovely down there” – well there must be a parallel universe and we are on the wrong side of “lovely” – It is very ordinary, lots and lots of mosquitoes and flies – no facilities whatsoever and a very small unloved camp ground, BUT it is okay for two nights (1 day) – so we can catch up and plan our next move.  We are in for some scorchers 42C ‘ers – so we have had to rethink our plans to go to Gawler Ranges this week.  We are now going to drive down to Coffin Bay and Lincoln National Park and spend a few days there, if the heat leaves, we will go up to Gawler or other wise drive up the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula.

Tomorrow we head south to near Port Kenny – approximately 166 kms to Coodlie Park as a half way break on our way to Coffin Bay National Park.  Coodlie Park to Coffin Bay is 207 kms.

  1. I hope you enjoy Port Lincoln area - we remember it very fondly! I also remember our first trip back along the Eyre Highway against what we had actually imagined it would be - boy, were we wrong. The cliffs are just fascinating - we were lucky to cross during whale season the first time and what a sight that was! Enjoy!
