After leaving White Mountains we started to climb the Great Dividing Range on our way east. We stopped at the look out near Burra (yet another duplicate name in Australia). The look out was basically a similar view that we saw yesterday, not worth taking a photo of.
Our aim is to get to Charters Towers today. We were late leaving White Mountains and didn’t arrive into Charters Towers until late in the day. We camped at the top tourist park on the western side of town. It was quite a good park, but the area is noisy. It’s just a busy town with rail and road transport going all hours.
Tuesday morning, we headed into town (a) for hair cuts – we were starting to go feral :) and to have a look at the architecture of the town.
This is Gill Street, Charters Towers – it is like a bigger version of Maclean with a dog leg in the main street.
The Charters Towers Stock Exchange – above left and the view inside.
Beautiful buildings. All made of brick! even the round columns, then rendered ! I thought they were sand stone and painted. They were certainly good a flashing up buildings out there.
The view of Charters Towers from the hill where gold was found. The hill is referred to as The Towers.
Late in the afternoon we went up to the Towers to see the sunset and a film and story of the history of Charters Towers.
There were plenty of story boards on the history.
Late afternoon and all the cute rock wallabies were out fooling around.
There were quite a few red tailed black cockatoo around as well.
It was well after 8.30pm by the time we got home – so a very late dinner. We enjoyed the show and the host gave a very informative talk on the past history of Charters Towers.
