Sunday 17th May – Millaa Millaa to Granite Gorge Nature Park – wet misting rain

After 299 days on the road – we are doing our first wet pack up.
It is just nuisance mist and the canvas is wet – we use plastic to cover the bed so our bedding stays dry and that is successful.
We are driving from Millaa Millaa which is 830 metres and is much cooler and wetter than Mareeba which is 417 metres and is warmer and drier.
The coast will have more showers plus the forecast is a lot of wind.  We can base ourselves here for the week and explore the northern area.
We drove over through Atherton today and what a lovely large town it is.  While in Atherton, we visited the Chinatown.

This was a Chinese community living on the outskirts of Atherton early 1900’s  The only remaining building is the temple.

You can just glimpse the main street and there were many buildings either side of the road, but none directly in front of the temple as this was bad feng shui.  The temple was sited to face the water and have the mountains behind.

Intricate wood carving of birds in trees.  The outside of the building is corrugated iron from the UK.  They laid the corrugated iron horizontally for the temple which created shadow and kept the building cool.  The meeting house has the corrugation running vertical.
The reception for the museum is the old Atherton Post Office which has been moved to the site.  Inside there is a Chinese Museum and also a room dedicated to our war veterans.

In the Chinese museum, the story is of the Chinese who lived in China Town and their decedents who still live here today.

We left Atherton and took a back road over to Granite Gorge Nature Park arriving around 3pm just in time for a cup of tea.  We let our under tent matting dry out before we set up.  The weather over here was patches of sun and blue sky, so it looks like we might have a little better weather.  There are lots of walks to do and the rock wallabies are very friendly.  Plenty of birds to try and photograph as well.  We saw our first squatter pigeon this afternoon.
