Thursday 7th May 2015 – Porcupine Gorge – fine clear skies warm – gentle breeze 12c-28c

Today is the perfect day – the days you dream about.

Our pre booked site has worked out okay – we have some morning and afternoon shade.  Qld Parks has online booking of sites but they do not show photographs of the individual sites or as much detail as SA does.  Everybody complains about this system, but it is easy to use but annoying if you want to stay an extra night or check out the sites first.  They should provide a tower so you can connect to the website from the park.  That’s the dream but it will eventually happen.

It has been worth the wait to come here.  It is a stunning location.  The park appears to have been totally revamped recently as all of the amenity facilities are new :)

The track down is short only 1.1 kms

The pyramid camp ground is named after this formation in the gorge.

The path down – it is good walking, the steps are nicely placed, but there are steep sections which we will have to tackle coming back up.  The walk was across slopes where they could do that which saved on the steps.

Down at river level.  These were natural dams in the sandstone, in some the water was clear and in others it was murky.

We saw plenty of fish in the clear ponds.

We could pick out a couple of varieties of fish.  There were black and white striped ones as well.

The view upstream along the sandstone base.

This afternoon is r & r time  – we have been on the move all day everyday – time for a break to do nothing.

The large awning window covers serve as verandah covers as needed.  This forward facing window has another zip up cover inside which can be used for privacy.  This photo was taken at lunch time – we had shade from the trailer out the back and shade from the trees in front.  Later the trees at the back shade the trailer as well.   There was a cool breeze filtering through – it felt like a ocean breeze – but of course that is impossible.  It was hard to imagine why it was so cool as it was coming from the west and across a lot of barren land.

Late afternoon, we did the new walk to the cliff top 2.6 km return.  This gave some excellent views down the gorge.  Unfortunately it would be best done mid morning to late afternoon as we had to contend with shadows in the gorge.

The views looking downstream to the Pyramid formation.
