It was a little colder overnight, the temperature drops a couple of degrees before dawn.
Last night it was around 7 and early this morning down to 4 – so jackets, long pants on for a little while until the temperature climbs. The days have been high 20’s and nice out of the wind. The wind has a chill to it. After our big day yesterday, we decided to relax and do some maintenance. Clean out some of the dust, and wash.
Washing Day
We discovered the next morning that we had set up right under a nesting pair of budgerigars only a couple of metres above our kitchen. This is the male outside the nest. He comes and feeds the female. We were concerned that they would abandon the nest, but she is still on the eggs.
We put in the Lobbie pot and caught three fresh water crayfish pretty quickly. Two were smaller than the one pictured, so we threw them back and then waited, and waited, and waited and caught nothing else
Later mid / late afternoon, we decided to put the kayak in. Now this was idea was abandoned at the Barcoo waterhole because of the steepness of the bank, the mud etc. At Gum Hole the bank has a gentle slope, but lots of mud which even damp will send you up to your thighs. We managed to launch the kayak and get in mud free, we were pretty happy with that. We even managed to repeat the effort on the return. We paddled to the end of Gum Hole and found a shallow entry into another lagoon, which was much larger and we paddled this from top to bottom. We bought the kayak to explore waterways after always camping near water and not being able to explore the creeks and lagoons. It was great to get it in the water so soon into our trip.
Some pictures on the water holes and banks.
As you can see they are big water holes. We saw a couple of Broglas but no chance of a photo.
Little Eagle Black Fronted Dotterel- really small and fast
