Friday 10th October 2014 – Cape Range – Exmouth – Fine Clear Sunny

10 Oct 14 - Exmouth 003

Here is a northern parrot (ring neck parrot) which came into camp late yesterday.  Once it was in this tree, we could see how this colour combination worked really well for camouflage.

This one is the yellow throated miner which is different from our noisy miner, although they have the same annoying sound.

This was our wake up view this morning.

We left our camp at 7am – an excellent start for camper trailer people.  We were the first the leave the camp.  We decided to stop for a cup of coffee at the turn off north to Exmouth and were happy to find a parked trailer providing us with heaps of shade.  The Burkett Road has only been tarred since 1997 and it is a great shortcut to Exmouth

When there are no trees, you have to improvise.

Exmouth is a really nice place.  It would be a great holiday destination, but the biggest problem is the trouble to get here.

The memorial & story board          The original jetty

This is the site of the launch of Operation Rimau, with the special ops group Z Force, during the second world war.  We had recently watched the documentary on this story which involved submersible canoes. It was one of the most daring raids of the war.  They entered Singapore Harbour and sunk many enemy ships.  It was a surprise to find that this was the location of the launch.

We headed to the top of the cape and down to the National Park area.  We wanted to stay at the top end of the national park for phone service (my mum is still not well) and for the day trips we wanted to do.  There were a couple of camps sites, one at Meza and one at Neds, neither of the sites were appealing, so we headed to Yardie Homestead Caravan Park which has great facilities. The best being lots of shade, lots of water and out of the wind :)

  1. We stayed at Yardie Homestead - good place to call home for a while! Did you notice the extremely high towers near the Navy area? Little Glen climbed to the top when he was posted there some 20 years ago - now he doesn't like heights and is not sure how he did it!!
