Friday 3rd April 2015 - Clearing Cloud, Blue Skies - Warm

Good Friday and who do I see this morning near the camp – a  little early but at least he is in the district.

They blend so well into the surroundings it is almost impossible to see them.

We are going to walk this purple loop walk today. It is around 8.4 kms.

Yuluna Circuit

Not that far from the start of the trail, there was a 500 metre uphill hike to Hans Heysen viewing area.  A place where he liked to go and have a beer in the afternoon to view the Three Sisters and the valley in the afternoon light.  He lived till 90 and obviously hiking these hills is good for your health.  It would have been much harder in his day without the tracks.  We got another view of the three sisters.  I think that this photo may now be more like his painting.

The light is just magical, we can see why he was inspired to capture it.

These are the trail maps along the way so you can see exactly where you are.  We are walking in the ABC Range – shortened from Alphabet Range as there are 26 peaks in the range.

River Gums line the creeks and Cypress the hillsides.  These seem to be everywhere and dominant over everything else.

Many feet have walked these pathways over time.

Crossing a dry river bed.  The variety of rocks is unbelievable, no wonder it is a Geologists paradise.  These ranges are very unique.  We even saw sea floor rocks like we saw in the Stirling Ranges in WA.  Mawson spent a lot of time here after his Antarctic trip because the geology matched the South Pole.

The remains of a shepherd’s hut from 1852.  Shepherds were employed to look after the sheep as there was no fencing and to protect the herd from dingos.

This is a very large skink in very good condition.  It was about 20cm in length.

The last part of the walk is down the river bed and past a very high gorge.  We came out near the top end of Koolaman Camp – the 2wd drive section about halfway between our camp and the car.  Glen walked to the car and I walked back to the camp.  I was going to get lunch ready, but soon remembered that most of the things I needed were in the car fridge.

We walked more than the 8.4km circuit as we did the side trip – to the Hans Heysen View Point.  We are planning to walk to the top of the first sister which is above our camp site.
