Thursday 15th January – Albany WA - warm overcast then sunny

Today’s Agenda:  Pack up from Crystal Springs today and drive over to Albany – heading a little further east….

We drove back through Walpole and then across to Denmark on our way to Albany.  We had phoned ahead and had our site booked in Albany.  The caravan park we chose is 11 kilometres out of Albany on the King River.  It is the most reasonable for peak season, it is close to town and is not beachside.  There are a lot of places in and around Albany, so we have booked for 7 nights and we will head up to Stirling Ranges National Park.

Denmark is only around 30 kilometres west of Albany, so if there is anything we feel we need to see, we still have the opportunity to do it.

We called into Elephant Rocks and Green Pool on our way across and it is so picturesque and very popular as it provides a very safe swimming beach.  Green Pool consists of a natural rock pool.  It is clear, calm and safe.  It was a site seeing everyone swimming in full wetsuits in the middle of summer – err, what summer?

For such a popular spot, the car parking is limited.

The natural rock formation keeps out the surf and sharks.  If there was one in there you would be able to spot it quickly as the water is so clear.

It is interesting that the elephant seems to be the most common rock formation named.

As we neared Albany, we turned off the South Coast Highway and chose the scenic route.  I had marked the Blueberry Farm and the Bush Food Factory on our list of must do’s – they were listed as being Albany, so it was a surprise to whiz by a very small sign to the Blueberry Farm – when will these people learn – they must miss so much business because they don’t provide adequate signage for tourists.  This is not the first business on our trip that we have bypassed as trying to turn around and go back is just all too hard.  The Bush Food Factory was well signposted and we easily found our way there.  The owners were very knowledgeable and friendly and told us all about their operation and the plants that they were growing.  We stayed for lunch, a shared pizza of smoked roo meat, local cheese and bought some lemon myrtle sauces and finger lime marmalade.

The Bush Food Factory also had two chalets to rent.  These are kit homes and are based on the Nissen Hut style – great views -  we thought that they would be a great place to stay.  I thought Nissen Huts were from WW2 - but have since discovered that they were first designed and built for WW1

We found the caravan park quite easily and Donna could not have been more friendly or helpful in making sure that we were really happy with our site.   I will include a photo of our site before we leave.

Update on our climbing legs -  the day after the climb, a bit tight in the upper thigh muscles, but day two basically nearly gone, day three - all good.  Good recovery and not bad for climbing two trees :)
