We had originally planned to do our sail today but didn’t hear back from the tour operator and we were having second thoughts, so we have decided not to bother as we had other things on our agenda which were more important. Last night I could not recharge my laptop, so that became a priority to sort out the problem – which I thought was the 24v charge cord failing. We went to Leading Edge Computers and the owner there were extremely helpful. My cord is quite unusual and they didn’t have stock, but he did make one up for me that works and it was only $55 far cheaper than buying a replacement. Very happy with the service. We also decided to buy a spare radiator fan while we were here as we were advised at the last service that our fan had hairline cracks in it. We were extremely lucky to pick one up which was in stock. Service in Albany so far has been really good. We then went down to the Old Gaol and Museum this afternoon. We have decided to stay another night and drive up to )Porongurup National Park to do a couple of walks tomorrow and the following day when we pack up, and do the final walk before going on to Stirling Ranges. We will now start to get out of main towns, so needed to make sure that we are prepared. We bought the cheapest fuel of the entire trip this afternoon at $1.15 litre for diesel.
Inside Albany Gaol and the deterrent to not climb over the walls.
The cells were very dark, small and cramped. They say that they have ghosts there.
In all the museums I have been checking out the bread ovens for the design ideas to use when we make our pizza oven. This one had a interesting idea for a damper built into the side to control the heat – and the front tin shield to stop the heat rushing at you.
There were quite a few divided inner yards and lots of individual rooms all furnished of the period. it was interesting to see a very early gaol.
How Post Boxes used to look like.
We then crossed the railway lines over to the museum. The Da Vinci Exhibition which we visited in Geraldton is now in Albany – so we just did the main building and visited a replica of the Amity (Brigg).
The museum covered a diverse range of items, mostly all media and very few relic items.
A new frog recently discovered in and around Walpole. The white cut out is the actual size, so it is quite small.
Amazingly this ships figure head was taken from a wreck and was at the gate post of a local farm for many many years before it’s value was recognized and it was preserved and given/taken to the museum. Exceptional detail in the wood carving.
Museums today seem to rely on a photographic imaging more and more as their display which is somewhat boring as you can access this online, you usually go because you want to see relics not images. There seems to be more images and less relics now.
We have been seeing these lovely flowers everywhere in gardens, they are Ground Morning Glory and flower through Spring and Summer. There was a large display at the museum. They tolerate low water and wind, so are tough.
We stopped by and had a look over the outside of the Amity.
All the kids love it as it looks like a pirate ship.
